Versions

7-element (early)

1962-1964

7 elements/6 groups, earlier design

Less common, sought by collectors

8-element (late)

1964-1971

8 elements/7 groups, improved design

Best performer, most common

The 8-element version is widely considered superior. Both may contain radioactive thorium oxide glass which can yellow over time but can be cleared with UV exposure.

Common Issues

  • Radioactive yellowing (reversible with UV)
  • Sticky aperture blades
  • Focus ring wear

Buying Guide

Check for yellowing by looking through the lens - slight yellow is fixable with UV light. Test aperture for smooth operation. The 8-element version is preferred. All-metal construction should feel substantial.
