Understanding guide numbers

The guide number (GN) is a measure of flash power. It's defined at ISO 100 and relates aperture, distance, and flash power through a simple formula:

GN = Distance × Aperture

This can be rearranged to find any variable:

  • Aperture = GN ÷ Distance
  • Distance = GN ÷ Aperture

ISO adjustment

When shooting at higher ISOs, the effective guide number increases:

Adjusted GN = Base GN × √(ISO ÷ 100)

At ISO 400, your flash effectively has double the guide number.
