Understanding golden and blue hours

Golden hour occurs when the sun is between 0° and 6° above the horizon. The sun is low in the sky, producing warm, soft, directional light that's flattering for portraits and landscapes.

Blue hour is the period when the sun is between 4° and 6° below the horizon (civil twilight). The sky takes on a deep blue colour, ideal for cityscapes and moody landscapes.

The exact duration varies with latitude and time of year. Near the equator, transitions are quick (~20-30 minutes). At higher latitudes, golden hour can last much longer — and during polar summers, it can persist for hours.

Note: Times shown use standard timezone offsets and don't account for Daylight Saving Time. During DST periods, add 1 hour to the displayed times.
