14 October 2026Safety
All 69 chemical records re-checked against ECHA's classification data. Four records gained warnings that ECHA's official labelling carries: ammonium thiocyanate, sodium thiocyanate and potassium cyanide now say that contact with acids liberates very toxic gas; diethyl ether now says it may form explosive peroxides and that repeated exposure may dry or crack skin; nitric acid now says it is corrosive to the respiratory tract. Disodium EDTA, potassium carbonate, silver oxide and sodium sulfite are self-classified by suppliers rather than officially classified, and their notes now say which ECHA entry is shown and where the most-notified entry differs: for sodium sulfite most notifiers classify it as causing severe skin burns (H314) although the registrants' joint entry is unclassified, so check the safety data sheet. The mercury record now lists its REACH restriction entry.
14 October 2026Developers
21 developer records re-checked against the makers' own sheets. Capacity, bath sequence and keeping times were corrected where the sheet differs: Kodak and Jobo C-41 kits and Bellini E-6 use separate bleach and fixer (not a blix), Bellini E-6 processes 12 films per kit (not 8), Colortec E-6 keeps about 2 years unopened (not 12 months), Kodak's D-76 sheet gives 4 rolls per litre unreplenished (the record said 16) and XTOL about 15 per litre (not 20), Pyrocat-HD's semi-stand dilution is 1+1+200 to 1+1+400 (the old 2+2+100 was a stronger solution), and the Ilfosol 3 range is 20-24 C. Unsourced shelf lives, capacities and descriptions were removed or marked as not stated.
13 October 2026Data
Sixteen developer records checked against the makers' and recipe authors' own sheets. Ilford ID-11, Microphen, Perceptol and DD-X now show Ilford's 20 to 24C range; T-Max Developer shows Kodak's 24C with its shelf life and capacity; XT-3, Flic Film C-41 Eco, Fuji Hunt Chrome 6X (a 7-bath kit) and Diafine follow their makers' sheets. Beerol, Wine Developer, Caffenol-C-M, Parodinal, Vitamin C (PC-TEA) and 510-Pyro now give recipes and dilutions as published. Claims no source supports were removed, including finer grain than standard Caffenol, tannins, Guinness, a formaldehyde-free stabiliser and comparisons with Xtol. DD-X 1+9 and HC-110 dilution H are kept and labelled as community dilutions that are not in the makers' datasheets.
13 October 2026Data
The reciprocity calculator now follows the film makers' own published figures. Kodak's Tri-X 400 table gives 50 seconds for a metered 10 seconds (the old formula gave about 35), and Tri-X 320 and 400 now share Kodak's one table. T-Max 100 had the wrong value at 1 second, and T-Max 400 moves from a formula to Kodak's table. Corrected to the makers' tables: Fujifilm Velvia 50, Velvia 100, Provia 100F, Acros II and Superia X-TRA 400, Rollei RPX 400 and RPX 25, Fomapan 100 and 200, and Bergger Pancro 400. Ilford's factor for Kentmere Pan 200 is now 1.26 and Harman Phoenix 200's is 1.31. Eighteen films whose makers publish no figures beyond one second, or whose numbers came from forum estimates (including Kodak Portra, Ektar and Gold, Ektachrome E100, T-Max P3200, Double-X, CineStill, Lomography and Fujifilm 400), now say so instead of showing a calculated time. Tables are read in log-log space as the makers' charts are, and a result beyond a maker's last published figure is flagged so you can bracket. The long exposure guide, the film conditions guide and the night photography guide now match. Separately, the 645 frame is 56 × 41.5 mm everywhere, the home development guide now gives Ilford's and Kodak's agitation schemes side by side, and ferric chloride, glyoxal and cadmium bromide are in the chemicals database: the EU harmonised entry for cadmium bromide does not list it as a carcinogen, so the wet plate guides no longer say it is.
10 October 2026Cameras, lenses and scanners
Every camera, lens and scanner checked field by field against maker documentation and specialist databases, with sources now shown on each page. Around 2,600 values corrected. Lens entries that described lenses never made (including a leaf-shutter Pentax 67 shift lens, an Olympus 85mm shift lens and several Mamiya and Hasselblad lenses) were removed or renamed to the real lens, with the old addresses redirected.
10 October 2026Development times
TRI-X 400 push times checked against Kodak F-4017: EI 1600 times for D-76 1+1, XTOL and HC-110 dilution B corrected, four EI 800 times removed because Kodak publishes none (it advises normal development one stop under), and Kodak's EI 3200 times added.
10 October 2026Tools
The filter factor chart now uses Kodak's published daylight factors where Kodak gives one (for example No. 47 blue is 6x and a polariser 2.5x), and marks the rest as typical values.
10 October 2026Guides, glossary and Fix pages
The remaining 51 technique guides, all 457 glossary terms and all 25 Fix pages checked. Corrections include 80A and 85B filters that were swapped, print faults whose causes were reversed, camera and light meter specifications in the buying guides, and reciprocity examples that disagreed with film datasheets. Every Fix page now lists its sources.
9 October 2026Safety
Corrected hazard advice across the technique and alternative-process guides. Hydrogen sulfide from sulfide toners deadens the sense of smell, so smell is not a warning sign. Thiourea is a suspected carcinogen, not a mild hazard. Dichromates (cyanotype contrast, New Cyanotype, Ziatype, carbon, gum, oil and bromoil) are now flagged as carcinogenic and authorisation-listed. Potassium cyanide is no longer offered as a wet-plate fixer. A home-made residual fixer test recipe that could falsely pass prints was removed.
9 October 2026Safety
Mixing guidance corrected: the real gas risk is acid (including stop bath) meeting sulfite or thiosulfate, which releases sulfur dioxide, not developer meeting fixer. Hazards for hydroquinone, borax, chromium intensifier, mercury, bromine and silver nitrate (eye damage) added where they were missing, and disposal advice now follows local regulations rather than giving drain instructions.
9 October 2026Alternative processes
All 20 process guides checked claim by claim against Mike Ware, Bostick & Sullivan, James Reilly, Sandy King and Christina Anderson. Corrected: the Malde-Ware platinum method and ferric oxalate strength, Ware's single-solution New Cyanotype with its crystal-filtering step, the chrysotype and mordançage chemistry, gold toning before fixing for salt, albumen, Van Dyke and argyrotype prints, and the effect of dichromate strength on contrast.
9 October 2026Film processing
C-41, E-6 and black-and-white guides brought into line with maker data: CineStill Cs6 first developer at 40°C, Tetenal and Arista E-6 are 3-bath kits, push and pull times from Kodak, Ilford, Tetenal and CineStill, Ilford's fibre-print fixing and washing sequence, caffenol recipes as Reinhold G published them, and a Zone System worked example that had the exposure the wrong way round.
