Nikon Scan no longer runs on current operating systems; VueScan or SilverFast needed. The 5000 ED connects by USB 2.0; the 9000 ED needs FireWire (IEEE 1394), so an adapter on modern machines.

Critical: verify scanner powers on and communicates with computer before purchase. Test with VueScan. Check for stuck pixels in sensor. 5000 ED is 35mm (and APS with the IA-20 adapter) and connects by USB 2.0. 9000 ED adds 120 up to 6x9 but needs FireWire, so budget for an adapter; check its strip-holder catch for wear. Avoid units with scanning artefacts or banding.
