sensitiser

New cyanotype (Mike Ware)

Handle chemistry safely

Wear gloves and eye protection, work with good ventilation, and read the supplier’s safety data sheet before use. Hazard information here is a summary, not a replacement for it. Dispose of all photographic chemistry correctly, in line with local laws and your local authority’s guidance. Never mix waste solutions, and check the supplier’s safety data sheet before disposing of anything.

Ingredients

Potassium ferricyanide10 g
Ammonium iron(III) oxalate trihydrate30 g
Ammonium dichromate0.1 g
Water to make100 mL (distilled)

Notes

Make two hot solutions and combine them, then cool so that potassium ferrioxalate crystallises out. Filter off the crystals and dilute the liquid to volume. The result is a single sensitiser that keeps well. It contains a small amount of ammonium dichromate (an Annex XIV substance).
