What went wrong?

My film came back completely clear

The developed strip is clear or almost clear: no images, and you can see straight through it.

Check this first

Look at the film edges. Can you see the manufacturer's edge markings and frame numbers?

Likely causes

  1. 1.

    The film was never exposed

    Common
    How to tell
Edge markings are present and look normal, but there are no images. Development worked; no light reached the film.
    Fix
Check that the film was advancing: the rewind knob should turn when you wind on. Also check for a lens cap, a shutter that isn't opening, or a mirror stuck up.
  2. 2.

Fixer was used before developer, or the developer didn't work

    Common
    How to tell
The film is clear with no edge markings at all. Edge markings are exposed onto the film at the factory and only appear when it's developed, so if they're missing, development failed.
    Fix
Check the order of your chemistry and that the developer was mixed and diluted correctly. Test developer by putting a snipped-off film leader in it: it should go black within a few minutes.
  3. 3.

    Exhausted or contaminated developer

    Occasional
    How to tell
No edge markings, or very faint ones. Usually happens with old stock solution or developer reused past its capacity.
    Fix
Mix fresh developer and do the leader test before your next roll.

Avoiding it next time

  • Do a leader test whenever your developer is old or unfamiliar.
  • Lay your chemistry out in order, left to right, before you start.
  • Watch the rewind knob turn on the first few frames of every roll.
